After some of the iron in the crocidolite oxidizes, the material becomes the familiar shades of brown and gold of tiger's eye. This process forms bands of quartz with diagonal, discontinuous crocidolite fibers creating hawk's eye. The new crack fills the same way, but the crocidolite fiber is slightly offset because of the crack shear. The crack area fills with new material and then the rock cracks again, usually in a sliding motion along the existing crack surface because it is weaker than other areas. Quartz begins to grow on the crack surface, while crocidolite fibers begin to grow from pieces of crocidolite that are on the crack surface. As a metamorphic rock, its intriguing reddish-brown hues interweave with iron stripes in a symphony of earthy tones akin to the fierce gaze of its namesake: the majestic tiger. This is the healing crystal, Tiger’s Eye. The stealth, balance and utter stillness that speaks of supreme clarity of focus. This gemstone boosts confidence, brings joy, and attracts abundance. The low, guttural growl that stills the forest and puts all creatures on alert. They found no evidence that tiger’s eye was a pseudomorph, but rather proposed it was formed through a discontinuous crack-seal mechanism. Tiger eye is a wonderful gemstone for the Leo Zodiac. This theory was accepted as fact until the early 2000’s when some scientists studying pseudomorphs put a piece of South African tiger’s eye under a scanning electron microscope. The stone then weathered/rusted causing the surfaces of the remaining crocidolite to become coated in iron oxides creating the golden color. They believed that quartz replaced most of the crocidolite, and the remaining asbestos provided the bluish color. During the replacement process, the iron within the Crocidolite dissolves and stains the Quartz, thereby providing the golden yellow to brown color of the Tiger's Eye.ĭocument.Since the 1870’s, geologists believed that tiger's eye was a pseudomorph where quartz replaced crocidolite - a blue form of asbestos. These fibers form in a parallel yet wavy orientation, and this causes the intriguing chatoyant effect exhibited in Tiger's Eye. Crocidolite is a type of asbestos mineral, which means its composition is of fine, dense fibers. Chatoyancy manifests as a silky, wavy shimmer across the stone. It is often referred to as the fabled stone due to its mysterious appearance. Store will be closed intermittently during July to September as we will be away mining. Also called Brockman Tiger Eye and more rarely Devil Creek Tiger Eye. We also stock the rare Packsaddle variety. Tiger's Eye forms when Quartz forms over existing bluish-gray Crocidolite, and eventually entirely replace it. Tiger’s-eye is a chatoyant member of quartz used for both decorative and ornamental purposes throughout history. Tiger’s Eye is known for its brown and gold colors and unique chatoyancy. We are miners and suppliers of Marra Mamba Tiger Eye from Western Australia. Coined from the French œil de chat, meaning 'cat's eye', chatoyancy arises either from the fibrous structure of a material.Īs members of the quartz group, tiger's eye and the related blue-coloured mineral hawk's eye gain their silky, lustrous appearance from the parallel intergrowth of quartz crystals and altered amphibole fibres that have mostly turned into limonite. Chatoyance or cat's eye effect, is an optical reflectance effect seen inĬertain gemstones, woods, and carbon fibre.
